Ethics & training

បញ្ចសីល

The Five Precepts

The Five Precepts are the basic training in Buddhist ethics. Many people take them as a daily commitment to kindness, honesty and a clear mind.

Monks keep a much longer training code. Lay people commonly keep these five.

Five training rules

  1. Abstain from killing. Respect all living beings.
  2. Abstain from stealing. Take only what is freely given.
  3. Abstain from sexual misconduct. Honour your commitments and the trust of others.
  4. Abstain from false speech. Speak truthfully and kindly.
  5. Abstain from intoxicants. Keep the mind clear and alert.

How to listen and sit

New to Dhamma? These simple suggestions will help you settle in, whether you are attending a talk or an evening of meditation.

Listening to a Dhamma talk

  • Arrive a few minutes early and settle your body and mind.
  • Dress modestly and keep your phone silent.
  • Listen with an open heart. One idea to practise is enough.
  • Ask questions kindly, and at a suitable time.

Meditation evenings

Meditation is open to all, and newcomers are warmly welcome. The daily schedule lists it at 7:00 PM.

  • Wear comfortable clothes, and sit on a cushion, a chair or the floor, whichever suits you.
  • Begin by noticing the breath as it comes in and goes out.
  • Come as you are. Nothing needs to be prepared in advance.
